25 Faith-Based Creative Writing Prompts

  1. Listen to your favorite worship song.  What makes this song so special to you? What types of emotions does this song evoke within you?
  2. Make a list of 5 attributes of God.  Beside those attributes, write one sentence of why that characteristic of God is so important to you.
  3. Think of a fictional world where God is still the Creator.  How would the creation praise Him, serve Him, or acknowledge Him? Write one paragraph about these fictional characters.
  4. Write down a place you love to go.  Does that place have special meaning to you?  Why? How has God used that place to minister to your heart?
  5. What is a Bible verse that has meaning to you?  Write down a time when the Lord has shown His faithfulness with that verse.
  6. Think about something you struggle with in your faith.  Study the Scriptures and write down evidence within the Word that supports God’s promise to help you through that struggle.
  7. Pick someone in your life who doesn’t know the Lord.  If given the chance, what would you say to that person to lead them to Christ?  Write a letter to that person sharing the Gospel.  (This is for prompt exercise only–not intended to actually give to the recipient you are writing to).
  8. You are a time-traveling report for a Christian magazine and have just been assigned an interview with the Apostle Paul.  Research and write out the questions you would ask him.
  9. The Children’s Ministry at your church is in desperate of a kindergarten teacher and they are asking you to make up a lesson to teach.  Doing some light research, create a Sunday School lesson plan including activities for kindergarteners that would help keep their attention for 1 hour.
  10. You have been asked to speak at a Women’s Conference.  Your audience is 20-to-30 -year -old women who are married and pregnant or have young children.  What spiritual advice would you give to these young women in the short 30 minutes you have to speak? How would you encourage them in the Lord?
  11. Think of missionaries in another country (you may need to do some research if you don’t know any personally). Write out a prayer for the missionaries or organization.
  12. You’ve just landed your first freelance writing job with a well-known Christian blog.  The assignment is to write 800-1,000 words on faith-building activities for the Christmas season.  Write as if it were a real assignment!
  13. List 3 ways to serve.  Do you currently serve? What does the Bible say about serving in the church and in the community? How does serving make you feel?
  14. Write about a circumstance when God answered your prayers. What did it do for your faith? Were you able to use it as a testimony to God’s character?
  15. What are some ways you can bless someone who is not a friend?  Maybe this person is difficult to get along with or a stranger.
  16. You are a Biblical counselor and someone has just walked in the door crying and in deep despair.  What is your first reaction?  How would you comfort and encourage this fellow believer?
  17. Write about a time when you misinterpreted a situation.  What are some things you learned about yourself in those moments?
  18. Create a Vacation Bible School (VBS) theme for the upcoming summer program in your Children’s Ministry.  Though you are not writing the lessons, think about the overall theme, decorations, snacks, etc.  Examples are: Jungle excursion, Outer Space, Medieval Knights
  19. Write about a loss you’ve experienced in your life. How did this loss affect your faith?
  20. Which Bible character do you relate to the most?  What personality traits do you feel are similar?
  21. Create character profiles for four characters of the Bible.  What clothes might they wear? What would they eat? What would make them laugh? Get as detailed as your time allows. You could even sketch what they may have looked like.
  22. Think up a concept for a Christian business: What would it be called? What purpose does it fill? How would they glorify God in their business?
  23. If you were writing a Christian fiction book, what would the title be?  Describe the main character.
  24. You have the opportunity to go back to the 20-year-old you. What would you tell her about the Lord? What advice would you give her about the life ahead?
  25. You are in the Garden of Eden right before Eve takes a bite of the forbidden fruit.  What would you do to convince her not to disobey God?
